Watermelon Margaritas are the perfect refreshing and fun drink to impress your friends with on Cinco de Mayo or all summer long!
It was before I was even of legal drinking age that I discovered the idea of watermelon margaritas. I had been flipping through a magazine and stopped at a large-than-life photo of a glistening pink margarita, offset by a beautiful fresh lime wedge and sparking granules of sugar around the rim. It sounded amazingly refreshing and looked so pretty. I loved the seasonality of it, but knew I would have to wait a little while until I had my 21st birthday before I could ever try to make watermelon margaritas. It seemed like such a fun way to celebrate summer.
It’s probably been five years since I saw that margarita in the magazine, and I had completely forgotten about it until just recently. Delighted to have finally remembered, I knew it would be the perfect Cinco de Mayo recipe to share. I even decided to make a video on it! Don’t you just love when a random idea pops back into your head after so much time?
Watermelon Margaritas
Ingredients
- 1 watermelon
- 3/4 cup (6 fluid ounces) tequila
- 1/4 cup (2 fluid ounces) Triple Sec
- 2 limes, juiced
- 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
- Lime wedges, for lining rims and serving
- Margarita salt or granulated sugar, for lining rims
Instructions
- Cut off both ends of the watermelon with a large sharp knife so it can stand flat on the cutting board. Run the knife down the sides of the watermelon to remove the rind. Cut the watermelon in half. Roughly chop one half of the watermelon then place into the pitcher of a blender. Puree until liquefied. Pass through a fine mesh strainer into a liquid container. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.
- Cube the remaining half of the watermelon into ice cube-sized pieces. Place on a baking sheet and freeze until very firm, at least 4 hours or overnight.
- When ready to serve, combine 2 cups of the watermelon juice, tequila, Triple Sec, lime juice, and sugar in a pitcher and stir to combine. Place the margarita salt or sugar in a saucer. Run lime wedges around rims of the glasses then spin each rim in the margarita salt or sugar to coat. Fill the glasses almost full with the watermelon ice cubes. Divide the margarita mixture between the glasses and serve, garnished with lime wedges.
I tried this today, i used strawberry instead of watermelon. I love the result so much. Thanks for this wonderful recipe.
I made these on Saturday and they were soooooo good! I loved the watermelon “ice” cubes. I forgot to add triple sec but it was still good. I actually added a few mint leaves to the shaker and 1-2 for garnish. There was just a subtle hint of mint…sooo awesome!
Love the addition of mint! Glad you enjoyed the recipe, thanks so much for taking the time to leave a comment!
Forgot the lime but these were still delicious!
Love!
Gorgeous!! I definitely need to whip one (or two) of these soon!
