Fun and festive easy Peppermint Oreo Truffles require no baking and just 6 ingredients. Anyone can make these and they are an all-time family favorite!

Yield: 36 truffles

Prep Time: 25 minutes

Tessa's Recipe Rundown...

Taste: Super chocolatey, slightly tangy, with that refreshing hint of peppermint. So festive!
Texture: The chocolate on the outside is smooth and snappy while the filling is thick, rich, slightly chewy. Absolute perfection, seriously.
Ease: Only 6 ingredients and no baking. The truffles require chilling so you’ll need a little patience.
Appearance: I mean, it’s almost impossible to not pop one of these babies into your mouth.
Pros: Easy, festive, and wonderful holiday treat. Perfect for parties, gifts, or just for indulging in.
Cons: While I typically prefer treats that are more homemade, Oreos are my weakness!! These are too good not to make and share.
Would I make this again? Again and again, I’ve been making these for years.

Can you believe Christmas is right around the corner?

This is definitely my favorite time of the year and while we don’t get snow in Phoenix the mild weather is absolutely glorious. Still, any chance I have to make a sweet treat and avoid cranking the oven is welcomed and luckily these super simple Peppermint Oreo Truffles require no baking. Seriously anyone can make these, just get ready for a bit of a chocolate mess which happens to be the best kind of mess!

I originally posted this recipe in 2011 and decided to update the recipe and add new photos. I wanted to update because I make this recipe every Christmas season, it’s a tradition in my house because these little balls of heaven are SO good and perfectly festive. It wouldn’t be December without no bake Peppermint Oreo Truffles!

Crushed Oreos being formed into truffles

Now I mentioned this before, but Oreo cookies in baking recipes are my weakness. I prefer to make and share mostly homemade recipes with some exceptions, like using packaged cookies and crackers for pie crusts and the like.

However, I try to stay away from recipes that rely solely on a packaged product so these Peppermint Oreo Truffles are a bit of a change for me. AND there are about a million Oreo truffle recipes floating around the internet. So why share this recipe with you?

Well because it is just that good, it’s worth making some sort of exception for and because if there are any of you who haven’t tried this recipe yet, or who forgot about this recipe, I hope you’ll give it a go! You might love it as much as we do.

How to Make Christmas Oreo Truffles

What kind of cream cheese should you use for Oreo truffles?

Be sure to use bricks of full fat cream cheese. Not the kind you use to spread on a bagel. It should be fully softened to room temperature. Avoid using generic brands which sometimes have a high water content which can prevent the Oreo ball filling from setting up and maintaining its shape.

Why you should use coconut oil when making these Peppermint Oreo Truffles:

Since coconut oil is solid at room temperature, it helps to create a solid chocolate coating for the truffles. Especially when you store them in the fridge. You can use refined coconut oil if you prefer not to have any coconut taste.

If you want to make truffles where the chocolate coating won’t melt at all at room temperature, you’ll need to temper the chocolate. Check out my tutorial on how to temper chocolate here.

You could also use candy coating chocolate, but I don’t like the taste of that stuff (it’s not real chocolate).

How do you dip truffles in chocolate neatly?

Dipping Oreo balls into melted chocolate

Firstly, use baking chocolate that you chop up before melting. Most chocolate chips have stabilizers added in to help them maintain that chip shape so they don’t melt down as smoothly. This makes for messy looking truffles.

Secondly, keep the chocolate warm. You may need to reheat it if it becomes less pourable halfway through dipping your truffles. Oppositely, keep your Oreo balls cold. Make sure they’re fully chilled before dipping and if you’re making a big batch, keep them in the fridge until just before dipping in chocolate. This will help the chocolate set up more quickly.

If you want to get really fancy, you can use chocolate dipping tools to make super neat, clean, and professional looking truffles.

Do you have to refrigerate Oreo Truffles?

Because the filling is made from cream cheese and because the chocolate isn’t tempered, these will need to be kept refrigerated until just before serving.

How to store + freeze Oreo truffles:

Oreo truffles are good for up to 2 weeks in the fridge when stored in an airtight container! Or, store in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 2 months.

Can I make this recipe without the peppermint?

Of course! Just leave out the peppermint extract and the crushed candy canes.

If you want even MORE peppermint flavor and color, feel free to use Peppermint Oreos.

How to make
Peppermint Oreo Truffles

Yield: 36 truffles
Prep Time: 25 minutes
Chilling Time 1 hour 20 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour 45 minutes
Fun and festive easy Peppermint Oreo Truffles require no baking and just 6 ingredients. Anyone can make these and they are an all-time family favorite!

Ingredients

  • 39 (441 grams) regular Oreo cookies, don't remove cream filling
  • 8 ounces (227 grams) cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 3/4 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 16 ounces (454 grams) semisweet chocolate, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil or vegetable oil
  • 2 regular-size candy canes, finely crushed

Directions

  1. Place the Oreo cookies in the bowl of a food processor and pulse until finely ground. Add the cream cheese and peppermint extract and pulse until the mixture is well combined and smooth.
  2. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Scoop the mixture into balls about 1-inch in diameter. I like to use a spring loaded cookie scoop.

  3. Place the cookie balls in the freezer until well chilled, at least 1 hour or up to 1 day.
  4. When cookie balls are chilled, combine the chopped chocolate and oil in a medium microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30 second bursts, stirring between bursts, until just melted and smooth. Do not overheat.
  5. Drop each cookie ball into melted chocolate, coating evenly. Remove with a fork, gently tapping off excess chocolate. Place back on cookie sheet and immediately sprinkle with the crushed candy canes. Repeat with the remaining cookie balls. Reheat the chocolate as needed so it remains pourable.

  6. Refrigerate until set before serving. Store the truffles in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 15 days.

Recipe Notes

While I prefer a smoother texture, you can add some crushed candy canes into the Oreo cookie mixture for more peppermint taste and crunch.

Made a half batch today to see how they would taste. My daughter loved them. I used 1/2 60% dark chocolate mixed with semi sweet and coconut oil. I plan on trying the vanilla oreo cookies with white chocolate and peppermint. I can’t have caffeine.

I really want to try this, but at the moment obtaining baking chocolate/chocolate chips is sort of a pipe dream for me. Would I be insane to try it with dark chocolate candy bars? I’m sure it wouldn’t be as good but… would it technically work?

When using the coconut oil with the chocolate, should I heat it up before mixing it in with the chocolate to liquefy it? Or just put the solid form with the chocolate?

You can just melt it with the chocolate!

Hi! I would like to make these as a change, but I need to transport them, like overnight car traveling (but it’ll be cold 🙂 ) – If I were to temper the chocolate, would that help keep them ok – ie: not so melty? (obviously, they’ll be in a cooler with ice packs, but that only works so well)

thanks for everything! ps: your cinnamon rolls will be back this Xmas morning!

  28. #
    Julie — December 5, 2019 at 9:28 pm

A little time consuming (I tempered the chocolate) but worth it. Also, I didn’t temper enough chocolate so had to go back and donut again and rushed through it. It didn’t temper properly. So if you take a few extra minutes to do it properly, it’s worth it!!!

I used a digital scale to measure my ingredients and still found the Oreo mixture to be too wet. Therefore, they didn’t do well getting dipped in chocolate – they were very messy. I will stick to my old Oreo ball recipe.

    Tessa,
In reading through your recipe link for peppermint-oreo-truffles you have a Q&A section where you say how to store in the refrigerator. It says “How to store Oreo truffles – Because the filling is made from cream cheese and because the chocolate isn’t tempered, these will need to be kept refrigerated until just before serving. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks in the fridge! (This is directly above a question ”Do Oreo Truffles Freeze Well”)

However, directly above the Recipe Notes on the December 2019 challenge section you state: Refrigerate until set before serving. Store the truffles in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Would you please confirm if these can be refrigerated for the 2 weeks or only for the 5 days?
    Thank you.

My 12-year-old and I made these and absolutely loved them. I’ve been complemented on my Christmas goodie plate before, but this treat will be the highlight-so rich and yummy!

So yummie! I’ve never made Peppermint Oreo Truffles before but definitely will make them a lot from now on. They have an awesome consistency and the taste is a dream come true. Because in Germany it is really hard to find peppermint extract and not so easy as well to find candy canes I skipped the extract and candy canes and went for sprinkles instead. Everyone loved the truffles and asked for more!

Can I just melt the coconut oil? I think I saw you said we can just melt it with the chocolate? It seems very difficult to work with.

      Whatever you find easier!

Okay. I meant you melt it, not leave it in solid form, right? I made something once with it and the recipe didn’t say to melt the oil so I ended up with white chunks.

Soooo yummy! Slightly rich. I did use the mint oreos too. Definitely the prettiest ones I’ve ever made. And they were super easy! Mine were pretty wet and the freezing process sure makes all the difference. Don’t skip that.

These Peppermint Oreo Truffles were easy to make with a food processor. The coating part was a little messy, but not hard. I took them to a party, and several people asked for the recipe. I will increase the peppermint extract a little next time I make them.

These are pretty amazing. I’ve made Oreo truffles before but get a frustrated with the chocolate coating. The tip to make sure to have cold truffles and warm chocolate was a game changer! Definitely gave me confidence when my truffles came out looking nice. I also tried some with white chocolate… didn’t work as well. I think the fat might be different? Tessa, can you explain why that would be?

      Tessa Arias — December 29, 2019 at 10:35 am

Yes, white chocolate is harder to work with because of the lack of cocoa butter. Use bars of very high quality white chocolate chopped up for better results 🙂

Do you have a suggestion for brands? I could only find Baker’s brand.

The truffles are great, even without the crushed candy canes on top because I don’t get to buy them here. I definitely will make them again. Merry Christmas!

These were such a hit! (Brought them to Christmas potluck)

I’m not a huge peppermint fan, so I saved a few with no peppermint extract or candy canes and they were AMAZING!! Also they are so easy to make, so they are a great go to, plus they look super fancy. Thanks!!

I brought these to a holiday potluck and they were a big success! They are definitely delicious but I found them a bit of a pain to make which is why I am giving the recipe only 3 stars. First, the recommendation to use peppermint Oreos is definitely a good one – I used peppermint Oreos and the extract in my filling and still felt it was not minty enough – I ended up adding about three quarters of a teaspoon of extract to my coating (which worked great!). Second, the coating was very thick but the filling was very heavy and so I had difficulty coating them evenly without the filling ball breaking or falling off the toothpick. I was looking for a thin, smooth coat and this was challenging to achieve. Finally, I definitely recommend that other bakers harden them up in the freezer – my freezer was too full so I used the refrigerator and they were pretty firm but I think had they actually gone in the freezer it would have made a noticeable difference. Overall I would make them again because of the yummy taste but would not make them often because they were somewhat of a pain.
