Tessa’s Recipe Rundown
Taste: Meaty and savory and oh so satisfying. Texture: Each bite is full of scrumptious textures, better than your average sandwich! Ease: There’s some prep work involved, especially if you can’t purchase already sliced thin strips of steak. But once you get started it goes fast. Appearance: I’ll admit I struggled a little photographing these, partly because I just wanted to eat them! Pros: A fun way to satisfy your cheesesteak craving at home. Cons: None! Would I make this again? Yes!This post may contain affiliate links. Read our disclosure policy.
Today we’re visiting a land I like to call sandwich heaven. I’m actually not a huge sandwich fan, mostly because I’m utterly burnt out from having hundreds of mediocre sandwiches in my life for lunch day after day. For me, a good sandwich needs to have an array of textures, ingredients, flavors, all while sitting pretty inside excellent bread. Variety is the spice of life, right? And for me I need variety either on one plate or better yet, in one bite.
Now let me say that cheesesteak sandwich heaven is not a place free of controversy and argument. I know there is a lot of debate about what makes a traditional or authentic “Philly” cheesesteak, which is why I preface today’s video with a disclaimer that I am not claiming this recipe to be a Philly cheeseteak, it’s just the way I like ’em. So don’t write me any furious comments! I’m a firm believer that if a particular food tastes good to YOU, if the recipe works for YOU, then who cares about food “rules,” traditions, or authenticity?! Watch the video and let me know what your version of the ultimate homemade cheesesteak is. What kind of cheese do you like? If you’re in camp cheese whiz, I don’t know if we can be friends…
Homemade Cheesesteaks
Ingredients
For the sandwiches:
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 1 small bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
- 1 1/4 pounds ribeye, beef round, or top sirloin, thinly sliced
- 4 sturdy hoagie rolls
- Mayonnaise, if desired
- 8 slices mozzarella, provolone, or white American cheese
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Saute the onion and pepper until they are tender. Remove the vegetables to a bowl and heat the oil in the same pan. Add the beef and season to taste with salt and pepper. Saute until lightly browned and cooked through. Divide the meat into two batches if necessary.
- Spread each bun with mayonnaise, if desired. Divide the beef and vegetable mixture among the buns. Top with the cheese and oregano. Bake the sandwiches in the oven until the cheese is melted and the bread is slightly toasted, about 5 minutes. Serve.
nice and easy recipe. loved at first site
I love to make home-made cheese steak sandwiches but I never know how to get the beef sliced super-thin like that so instead I just use ground beef. I sprinkle the beef with salt, then brown it along with a thinly sliced yellow onion. After it it cooked for about five minutes, I lay thick slices of white American cheese on top of the meat/onions mixture and wait until it melts and then keep stirring it with the spatula until the melted cheese is all mixed into the meat/onions mixture, then I serve it on torpedo rolls. Super delicious flavor even if the texture is different because of ground beef.
Made these last night and they were amazing! The perfect meal to keep us away from the drive thru after a long day. They went together in no time and eventhough there aren’t a lot of ingridients there is big flavor! Thanks for my new go-to dinner in a flash!
You basically just summed up my exact feelings about this recipe! Glad you feel the same way 🙂
