Handle the Heat got a huge facelift, complete with new branding and incredible new functionality and recipe searching. Come check it out!

Who doesn’t love a good makeover?

Handle the Heat’s design and functionality has been basically the same since 2012, with only minor tweaks and changes since then. Meaning, a facelift and update has been a LONG time coming.

My goal for you is to have the best experience possible when you visit my site. I want it to be a happy place. I want it to be a resource for you to use again and again. That’s exactly why I’ve invested in basically taking this site back down to the studs and revamping everything.

Let me give you the tour!

Rebranding

Handle the Heat Logo
No more purple. Purple was totally my fave color in high school and since I started this blog during my first year of college, it makes sense that I went all out purpleness. After literally 6 years of purple a change was in order.

The new branding, including colors, fonts, and my purty new logo, all reflect a simple, fun, and feminine aesthetic that I love. I hope you love it too.

Functionality

Besides the new look there’s a TON of new functionality I am seriously bursting at the seems with excitement to show you.

First of all, the site now has a proper homepage with an INCREDIBLE visual recipe feature. You can still see thumbnails of the most recent blog posts there OR you can click on the “blog” option in the main navigation to see the most recent posts. But I wanted to make it really fun for whoever comes across my homepage to be able to find and explore the nearly 900 (!) recipes I’ve posted over the years.

Recipe Search

So let me explain the recipe search a little better, even though I think it’s simple enough not to need much explanation.

Recipe Homepage

On the homepage there are now several main recipe categories (including the latest recipes, my favorites, the most popular, and some other major or timely categories) that you can browse through. A click of each category instantly shows thumbnails of the recipes so you can easily explore.

Recipe Homepage Hover

Best part? When you hover over each thumbnail three icons appear. You can Pin the recipe right then and there without having to click on it, you can expand the recipe to get a quick view of what it’s all about, and you can star the recipe to save it to your favorites. More about favorites in a sec.

Recipe Search

Now, if you want to perform even more detailed searches the recipe index has been revamped in the same way. Get to it by clicking the Recipe tab in the main navigation. It’s just like the recipe thumbnails on the homepage, but you can easily search by the recipe name, ingredient, category, or even prep and cook times. You can use one of those search parameters or all of them to really narrow in on exactly what you’re hunting for! How awesome is that?! Play around here and let me know what you think.

Favorites

Handle the Heat Navigation
Besides the new recipe search functionality my other favorite feature is, of course, the ability to save your favorite recipes!

Handle the Heat Registration

You can now quickly and easily create an account on Handle the Heat and favorite any recipe so you can save it to come back to later. It’s basically like creating your own cookbook. And all fo’ free! Creating an account not only allows you to save recipes, but I’ll also be offering some exclusive awesomeness to everyone who signs up. Yipee!

Recipe Box Favorites

Save favorites by clicking on the little star icon on any recipe thumbnail, or in the recipe post itself.

Recipes

The recipe posts themselves have also gotten a major upgrade. The new format is really fun and helpful, giving you a quick glance of the recipe at the start of the post.

Handle the Heat recipe box

You can save to favorites, share on social media, or print the recipe right at the start of the post, and again within the recipe itself. You can also see the yield and prep times at the start, along with a quick description.

Mobile

Mobile Site
There are a few features that don’t work quite as well on the small screens of our phones, but my awesome web team has worked hard to make mobile function as smoothly as possible. You can still search recipes and view them with the same ease.

So what do you think? If you encounter any issues please let me know at tessa {at} handletheheat.com.

Up to now I’ve just printed what I wanted– this will make it so much easier. I am not completely computer savvy so it’s very helpful!!

Could you add a date to any blog entry. I do not get here everyday and the date stamp would be a great help.

    Thanks,
