Favorite Workout Videos


Today I’m taking another break from recipe writing to focus on another interest of mine: fitness! Writing a food blog can be challenging… a challenge of willpower! I try to just “taste test” some of the more indulgent foods that I post. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not concerned with loosing weight or anything but I want to feel energetic and healthy and live for a long time. At the same time I’m not a huge fan of working out but I know it’s good for me so I try to do it at least 3 times a week. Plus you always feel amazing and accomplished after a good workout. Sometimes when life gets crazy weeks can go by without a workout, though, which is no bueno.

I don’t have a gym membership for a few reasons. Number one is money, I’d rather spend that money on quality foods at the grocery store or on clothes or makeup. Number two is gyms are creepy and I don’t really want to socialize with anyone when I feel like my heart is pounding right out of my chest. Number three is that getting ready and driving to the gym takes time that I could be spending doing a million other things. There are some benefits to a gym membership, such as group classes or finding (non-creepy) gym buddies who will motivate you. However, I’ve recently found so many AMAZING and FREE workout videos online that, once organized, really provided all the structure and motivation I need to get into a regular workout schedule. One downside I’ve discovered to working out at home is that our puppy, Chewie, thinks my yoga mat is his place to accumulate all of his toys. I wish working out was as easy for us as it is for Chewie! He LOVES chasing his toy.

The videos in this list are relatively short (no more than 30 minutes typically) and I tried to focus on videos that don’t require much special equipment. I also prefer videos where the person showing you the exercises is engaging and keeps you entertained so the workout goes by quicker. Lastly, I have bad knees and can’t do high knee impact exercises so you may notice the exercises in these videos avoid strenuous knee impact or can be modified to do so.

      Haha! I just upgraded to faster internet and phew… it’s a pretty penny. Have to have it for school though since my classes are online this semester.

    I’m a huge fan of Jillian Michaels’ workout videos – my favorites are Ripped in 30 and Cardio Yoga! I looooove the cardio yoga because I can always convince myself to do it because it’s “just yoga” (but actually so hard!!)

      I’ll add those videos to my Christmas list! Have you tried Jackie Warner’s workout videos? I like hers too but my dog got his paws on a DVD and destroyed it 🙁

    I can’t wait to try these! I know i put a lot of impact on my knees so I’m excited I found a great list of resources to give them a rest.

    Also, I have a yorkie named Chewie as well!! She’s a little lady. She was named because when she was rescued from the puppy mill, her hair was a bit crazy and she looked like Chewbacca (well more like an ewok but we’re not star wars experts). Your boy is quite adorable and it’s refreshing to see him so full of energy and playing. Sadly our Chewie never really learned how to play but she’s gotten a little better.

    In the process of buying a house so gonna cut out the gym membership to save the money and because not near new home. You right about having better things to do than waste it driving to the gym to hang out with creepy strangers, lol!
