Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser – I know, I know. I’m a little late with this one (the book was originally published in 2002). Unfortunately all the alarming facts detailed in this book are still relevant. If you want to learn more about how fast food has changed virtually every part of food production and the American diet as a whole, pick up a copy. Just be wary of reading the slaughterhouse chapters before eating. Or ever looking at ground meat again. Ugh.

Listening to

I Want That You Are Always Happy” by The Middle East – I’ve had “As I Go To See Janey” stuck in my head for days. And I don’t mind it.

Essie Chinchilly

Damages, Season 4 – Glenn Close is phenomenal in the show, as is Rose Byrne (who puts on an almost flawless American accent).
 Wishing for
Breville Smart Oven – for those 115 degree Arizona days when the last thing I want to do is turn on my inefficient oven and heat the whole house.

What are you reading, listening to, wearing, watching, and wishing for?

Whoa, I didn't know Rose Byrne wasn't American!!

Also, I haven't eaten red meat since I read Fast Food Nation about 7 years ago. Even though it details the American meat industry, and I'm in Canada, I just can't bring myself to.

      Yep, she's an Aussie!

Wow, that's impressive. I think I enjoy red meat too much to give it up entirely, but I have definitely been eating it less and less over the past few years. I found it interesting that a few times in the book the author mentioned US meatpacking and potato companies having to compete with Canadian companies that offer even lower prices. Wonder how accurate that is now.

I wonder…. I should re-read the book! In the two or so years that I've been reading food blogs, I've always thought that prices for American meat (well, American everything!) seemed a lot lower than prices here. But even within Canada there is a lot of regional variation in pricing. Incidentally, I just came across this Meat Eaters Guide from the Environmental Working Group – pretty interesting!

Ha, I had no idea Rose Byrne wasn't American! Fooled me! And love that show.

I also love the nail polish. Very chic!

Right now I'm reading Catching Fire, the second installment of the Hunger Games, watching season 3 of Breaking Bad, and wishing that my boss gives me the okay to switch to part time.

I've been meaning to read the Hunger Games, have heard so many great things. I just added Breaking Bad season 3 to my queue on Netflix! That show is nuts. Hope your boss lets you go part-time :)

I didn't know Rose Bryne wasn't American either! Makes me like her even more. I'm behind on Damages since it moved to DirecTV. I need to Netflix it!

Hi Tessa, this is my first time on your blog. I am LOVING it! I too live in this oven we call Phoenix. My oven is only on before 12 and after 7. Too hot!!!

So, I am awaiting this book: Amarcord: Marcella Remembers (Marcella Hazan)

Wearing: Boom Boom by sinful (lovely summery coral color)

Watching: Suits (Fantabulous show on USA network)

Listening to: Beethoven Symphony 3 (that is what I have on in my daughters playroom)

Wishing for: I would love the Breville Smart Oven. However on a more practical note I really need a great rolling pin. After rolling out cookies with a rolling pin that my husband picked me up one day at Target when my pin broke. I am thinking that is a priority unless I want to go to all drop cookies. I am thinking of Vic Firth's bakery pin.

Thank you! Great to hear from a fellow Phoenician. I love my Vic Firth rolling pin – can't imagine it ever breaking!

Fun post! I love Vonnegut, though I haven't yet read that one. I'd be interested to hear your review when you're done. And I'm so excited for the new season of SYTYCD! I'm not totally caught up, but I've got the recent episode waiting on my DVR 😀

I am reading The Time Traveler's Wife, listening to Mumford & Sons, and wearing I'm not really a waitress by OPI.

We totally have a vitamix blender, and it is the best thing ever. Every kitchen should have one! When you blend strawberries, it actually pulverises the seeds too! (strawberry seedes are…small:)
It's really handy when you want some…. quick strawberry frozen yogurt at, say, 12:30 am.
