Chocolate-Orange Silk Mousse

I’m in love…

With this recipe. I was skeptical about the idea at first (take a look at the ingredients), but I’m completely sold now. It’s one of those freaky sneaky recipes that tastes so scrumptious no one will ever be able to tell it’s vegan and almost guilt-free! I served this mousse to my boyfriend and sneakily waited until he finished eating to tell him it had tofu in it. He looked at me in shock. While eating the mousse he said something along the lines of “I wish I could fill a pool with this and swim in it.” He had no idea this mousse was made from tofu. No one will. Promise.

By the way – to make this dessert 100% vegan be sure to use vegan chocolate wafer cookies (or chocolate graham crackers if you can’t find wafers) when making your cookie crumbs. If you’ve never purchased tofu before, I found it in the alternative refrigerator section of my grocery store – where all the dairy-free and vegan butters and other soy products are.

Recipe Rundown
Taste: The marriage of chocolate and orange is blissful. Fresh yet rich in a way that makes your mouth smile and your eyes close to savor the taste.
Texture: Lusciously thick and smooth, you’d never guess tofu provides the base for this mousse.
Ease: Super easy, way easier than traditional mousse.
Appearance: I love the garnish of extra cookie crumbs and orange zest. This is the perfect chance to use any pretty little glass serving dishes you might have. Mine are miniature trifle dishes from Sur la Table.
Pros: Easy, healthy, wonderfully delicious. It really doesn’t get much better than that.
Cons: Absolutely none.
Would I make this again? 100% yes.

Chocolate-Orange Silk Mousse

*Note: To make chocolate wafer crumbs, place chocolate wafer cookies (or chocolate graham crackers) in a zip-top bag and crush until fine crumbs form using a rolling pin or mallet. Alternatively, crush in a food processor.

Yield: 5 servings

Ingredients:

1 (12.3-ounce) package reduced-fat silken tofu (1 1/2 cups)
4 ounces bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 cup boiling water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated orange zest, plus more for garnish
2/3 cup confectioners' sugar
2/3 cup chocolate wafer crumbs (about 3 ounces)

Directions:

Puree tofu in a food processor, scraping down the sides as needed, until completely smooth.

In a small bowl combine the chocolate and cocoa powder. Pour boiling water over mixture and stir until melted and smooth. Stir in vanilla extract and orange zest. Add the sugar, a little at a time, stirring until completely incorporated and smooth.

Add chocolate mixture to tofu in food processor. Pulse mixture until smooth and completely combined, scraping down the sides as needed.

Layer chocolate mousse and cookie crumbs in dessert dishes. Garnish with a final sprinkle of cookie crumbs and orange zest. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

    yummy, I am so making it over the weekend! My bf seems to be allergic to the word ' vegan' , so I will “forget” to mention the tofu part ;) Thanks for another fab recipe!

    I would never guess by looking at this that there is tofu in it. That IS sneaky! I'm going to have to try it out.

    Chocolate and orange are such a great duo! I've always been intrigued with desserts made with tofu – I'll have to give them one a try!

    This looks amazing! I'm all for sneaky desserts so I'll have to try this out. I got some tofu to do something like this before, but I was too scared and eventually put it in the freezer. But this recipe inspires me! Thanks for sharing. :)

    I'm very interested in trying this, but I am concerned that the orange zest is gritty, or at least detracts from the smoothness of the mousse. What was your feeling about the orange zest's texture in this recipe?

      I didn't notice the orange zest at all within the mousse! I have a super sharp Microplane zester that creates very fine pieces of zest. Also, really scrubbing your orange clean and using an organic orange helps.

    This mousse must be amazing! All the ingredients are so perfect, I bet the final result is even better than the sum of all its parts :-). And the pics are gorgeous too – can go right to a cooking magazine cover!
